Sports and Cockshutt Moulded Aircraft

The social events extended beyond just fancy galas, with the Girls’ Industrial Softball League being one of the centrepieces of Cockshutt Moulded Aircraft’s sports community. Competing against teams from other industrial companies across Brantford, the Cockshutt Moulded Aircraft women’s softball team was beloved by the employees of Cockshutt. The league provided an opportunity for sports in Brantford to continue during the war, alongside many other female and male sports teams funded by the various industrial companies of the city.

The spotlight for women’s sports was silver lining of the war, allowing for their games to become important features of the wartime community, alongside their male counterparts. Results of their games and details were posted in the sport’s section of the Expositor and shared among colleagues at work. Much like with the galas, women’s softball acted as an outlet for people to distract themselves from the hardship of war and build a community through their workplace.
