Overview and Purpose

This lesson is designed to be a capstone lesson for Grade 12 History classes.

This lesson is intended to be used for both review and demonstration of the student’s knowledge of modern Canadian history. Utilizing previous knowledge is integral for this lesson; access to notes and textbooks may be necessary.

In this lesson, students will use a birds-eye view map of Brantford from 1875 as well as Google Maps (focus on Brantford) to consider which events, trends, and developments occurred in Canada between the time of the first map and the modern map. Students will answer questions to help them reflect on these changes, including during which time period they occurred and who instigated the changes. Following the worksheet, students are asked to complete a short biography of one Canadian who initiated an event, trend, or development that in turn changed how Brantford looks on a map today. A consideration of their cultural identity and the impact they played on the Canadian identity will be included.
